MozBar not working? Work through these 8 fixes in order.

Quick answer: the two most common causes are that you are not signed in to a free Moz account, and that the extension is installed but not pinned to the toolbar. Together those explain the large majority of “MozBar is not working” reports. Both take under a minute to check.

Find your exact symptom first

MozBar fails in several distinct ways, and they have different causes. Start with the row that matches what you are seeing.

The eight fixes, in order of how often they work

Work down the list. Roughly two thirds of cases are solved by the first two.

1. Sign in to a free Moz account

This is the single most common cause, and the least obvious. MozBar installs fine, appears in the toolbar, and returns zero for every metric until you sign in. There is no error message telling you this — it just shows 0.

• Click the MozBar icon, then Sign in.
• A free Moz Community account is enough. You do not need Moz Pro to see Domain Authority and Page Authority.
• If you already signed in months ago, sign out and back in — the token expires.

2. Pin the extension to your toolbar

Chrome, Edge and Brave now hide new extensions behind the puzzle-piece icon by default. The extension is installed and running — you simply cannot see it, which reads identically to “it did not install”.

• Click the puzzle-piece (Extensions) icon in the browser toolbar.
• Find MozBar in the list and click the pin icon next to it.
• The MozBar icon now stays visible. Click it to toggle the bar on.

MozBar is also off by default after install. Even pinned and signed in, you have to click the icon once to switch it on for the current tab.

3. Reload the tab — and any tab open before you installed it

Extensions only inject into pages loaded after the extension started. Every tab you had open before installing, updating or re-enabling MozBar needs a hard reload before the bar appears there.

• Hard reload with Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac).
• After a browser update, restart the browser completely rather than just reloading.

4. Turn the SERP overlay on, and check your Google domain

Metrics on search results pages come from a separate setting to the page toolbar. If you see the bar on normal pages but nothing on Google results:

• Open MozBar settings and confirm the SERP overlay is enabled.
• Check which Google domain you are on. The overlay is built around standard Google results; regional domains, Search Labs, AI-mode results and heavily personalised layouts frequently render without it.
• Switch the results page out of any experimental layout and reload.

5. Blank on one site only? The page is probably not a normal web page

If MozBar works everywhere except one place, the problem is that page, not the extension. Extensions cannot inject into:

• Browser internal pages — chrome://, edge://, about:, the new-tab page, the Web Store itself.
• Local files and localhost, unless you have explicitly allowed file URLs for the extension.
• Pages behind a login that block third-party script injection, and many admin dashboards.
• Pages with a strict Content Security Policy, which can suppress the injected bar or strip its styling.

A staging site with no crawl history will also legitimately show no authority data. That is a correct result, not a fault.

6. Cut off, squashed or overlapping the page

The bar is injected into the page, so it inherits the page's layout quirks.

• Reset zoom to 100% with Ctrl+0 / Cmd+0. Zoom is the usual cause of a cramped or clipped bar.
• Widen the window. Below roughly 1000px the bar runs out of room and truncates.
• Sites with sticky headers or their own fixed top bars will overlap it. Scroll down a little and it usually settles.
• Turn off other SEO extensions temporarily — two toolbars injecting at the top of the same page fight for the same space.

7. Check for extension conflicts and blockers

MozBar needs to load remote data and inject content. Several common tools stop it:

• Ad blockers and privacy extensions may block Moz's API requests. Allowlist the site, or disable the blocker on one page to test.
• Other SEO toolbars injecting at the same position cause visual conflicts.
• VPNs and corporate networks sometimes block the API endpoint entirely, which produces blank metrics with no error.
• Strict tracking protection in Brave and Edge can block the request that fetches metrics.

Fastest diagnostic: open a clean incognito window with only MozBar enabled. If it works there, something else in your normal profile is the cause.

8. Reinstall cleanly

If nothing above worked, remove and reinstall rather than repairing:

• Remove MozBar from the browser's extensions page.
• Restart the browser completely — not just the window.
• Reinstall from the official Chrome Web Store listing only. Third-party .crx downloads and mirror sites are a genuine malware risk and are not the same product.
• Sign in again, then pin it.

If it still fails after a clean reinstall, the extension itself may be broken for your browser version. Moz has historically left MozBar unpatched for long stretches, which is exactly why the next section exists.
