MozBar troubleshooting

MozBar not working? Work through these 8 fixes in order.

Updated 19 August 2026

Quick answer: the two most common causes are that you are not signed in to a free Moz account, and that the extension is installed but not pinned to the toolbar. Together those explain the large majority of “MozBar is not working” reports. Both take under a minute to check.

Find your exact symptom first

MozBar fails in several distinct ways, and they have different causes. Start with the row that matches what you are seeing.

The eight fixes, in order of how often they work

Work down the list. Roughly two thirds of cases are solved by the first two.

1. Sign in to a free Moz account

This is the single most common cause, and the least obvious. MozBar installs fine, appears in the toolbar, and returns zero for every metric until you sign in. There is no error message telling you this — it just shows 0.

If every site shows DA 0 and PA 0, including well-known ones, this is almost certainly your problem. A real DA of 0 is extremely rare on an established domain.

2. Pin the extension to your toolbar

Chrome, Edge and Brave now hide new extensions behind the puzzle-piece icon by default. The extension is installed and running — you simply cannot see it, which reads identically to “it did not install”.

MozBar is also off by default after install. Even pinned and signed in, you have to click the icon once to switch it on for the current tab.

3. Reload the tab — and any tab open before you installed it

Extensions only inject into pages loaded after the extension started. Every tab you had open before installing, updating or re-enabling MozBar needs a hard reload before the bar appears there.

4. Turn the SERP overlay on, and check your Google domain

Metrics on search results pages come from a separate setting to the page toolbar. If you see the bar on normal pages but nothing on Google results:

Searching a different location is a related question and a common source of confusion — MozBar's location setting changes the results it requests, not the metrics it shows. If your goal is local rank checking, a browser extension is the wrong tool; see the MozBar alternatives guide.

5. Blank on one site only? The page is probably not a normal web page

If MozBar works everywhere except one place, the problem is that page, not the extension. Extensions cannot inject into:

A staging site with no crawl history will also legitimately show no authority data. That is a correct result, not a fault.

6. Cut off, squashed or overlapping the page

The bar is injected into the page, so it inherits the page's layout quirks.

7. Check for extension conflicts and blockers

MozBar needs to load remote data and inject content. Several common tools stop it:

Fastest diagnostic: open a clean incognito window with only MozBar enabled. If it works there, something else in your normal profile is the cause.

8. Reinstall cleanly

If nothing above worked, remove and reinstall rather than repairing:

If it still fails after a clean reinstall, the extension itself may be broken for your browser version. Moz has historically left MozBar unpatched for long stretches, which is exactly why the next section exists.

If you are on Firefox or Safari, nothing above will help

MozBar is published as a Chrome extension. That single fact answers most browser questions:

BrowserWorks?What you have to do
ChromeYesInstall from the Chrome Web Store, then sign in.
EdgeYes, one extra stepOpen the Chrome Web Store in Edge and accept the prompt to allow extensions from other stores.
OperaYes, one extra stepInstall “Install Chrome Extensions” from Opera's own add-ons site first.
Brave, Vivaldi, ArcYesChromium-based; installs directly. Check tracking protection if metrics stay blank.
FirefoxNoNo maintained official build. Older third-party listings are not the same product.
SafariNoDifferent extension format; no MozBar build exists.
Mobile browsersNoChrome for Android and iOS do not support desktop extensions at all.

If you are still stuck: what to use instead

MozBar has long stretches without maintenance, and “it broke again” is a recurring experience rather than a one-off. If you have worked through all eight fixes, the honest recommendation is to stop fighting it.

You only wanted authority metrics while browsing

Several free extensions show comparable domain-level metrics and are actively maintained. This is the most common case, and the cheapest to solve.

You wanted on-page and technical checks

A dedicated on-page extension does titles, meta, headings, canonicals and schema better than MozBar ever did.

You were checking link profiles

That is a research job, not a toolbar job, and a browser extension was always going to be a poor fit for it.

You need rank tracking or audits

No extension covers this. If this is the real job, you are looking for a platform, not a toolbar.

Frequently asked questions

Why does MozBar show 0 for every website?

You are almost certainly not signed in. MozBar returns zero for every metric until you sign in with a Moz account, and it shows no error explaining this. A free Moz Community account is enough — Moz Pro is not required for Domain Authority and Page Authority.

Why is MozBar not showing up at all?

Two reasons account for nearly all cases. Chrome and Edge hide new extensions behind the puzzle-piece icon, so it needs pinning; and MozBar is off by default, so it needs one click to activate on a tab. Also reload any tab that was open before you installed it.

Is there a MozBar for Firefox?

No. There is no maintained official MozBar for Firefox. Firefox does not use Chrome's extension format, and older third-party listings are not the same product and should not be trusted. Use a Chromium-based browser, or a different extension.

Why is MozBar blank on one particular site?

Extensions cannot inject into browser internal pages, local files, or pages with a strict Content Security Policy. If MozBar works everywhere else, the page is blocking injected content — that is the site's behaviour, not a fault in the extension.

Why is the MozBar cut off or overlapping the page?

Reset browser zoom to 100% with Ctrl+0 or Cmd+0, which fixes most cases. Below roughly 1000px of window width the bar truncates, and sites with their own fixed headers will overlap it.

What is “OpenMoz”?

There is no Moz product called OpenMoz. People searching this usually want Open Site Explorer, Moz's old link research tool, which was retired and folded into Moz Link Explorer inside Moz Pro. Free link data now comes from the limited Link Explorer allowance on a free account.

Does MozBar work on mobile?

No. Chrome for Android and iOS do not support desktop extensions, so no version of MozBar runs on a phone or tablet.

Is MozBar still maintained?

It receives updates, but with long gaps, and periods where it is broken for a browser version are common. If you rely on it daily, having a maintained alternative installed alongside it is sensible.
