Choose by the repeated task
Research and prospecting: test Ahrefs with the specific competitor, backlink and keyword questions you need to answer. Pick Starter only if its limits cover the session; do not compare Starter with a much broader plan and declare the suite universally cheaper.
Daily monitoring and recurring delivery: test SE Ranking against the locations, devices and client report you must maintain. Work out the total for manager seats, white-label delivery and extras.
Already happy with one: require a concrete gain before switching. Different link indexes and ranking observations can produce different numbers without either being a measurement error.
A representative pilot, not a feature-count winner
- Select one domain, twenty competitor queries and the keyword list from your most demanding report.
- Use identical locations, devices, date ranges and search-engine settings.
- Check whether each tool finds the links and topics that matter to your project.
- Build a real report, including whatever branding and sharing the client needs.
- Record time spent, credit or export limits reached, and the full invoice.
Trackers may use different fetch times. Do not expect every ranking observation to match exactly. Test whether the result supports your decisions and promises.
Before moving from Ahrefs to SE Ranking
Export the research lists, tracked keywords, target URLs, tags, locations and reports you may need later. Preserve old exports as a dated archive. Confirm whether the destination supports historical-data import; accepting a keyword list does not prove that old position history can be recreated.
Run both through a reporting deadline before ending the old subscription. Use the switching calculator to include migration hours and subscription overlap. If the annual saving is small, keeping a proven workflow can be the better decision.

Is SE Ranking cheaper than Ahrefs?
It depends on the plan, currency, billing commitment and extras. Ahrefs Starter is a smaller purchase than Lite. Compare a matched workload and total invoice before claiming a saving.
Can I transfer old rankings between the products?
Do not assume it. Export the keyword list and preserve ranking reports separately. Verify the destination’s historical-import options before cancelling.
Which tool has better backlink data?
A universal winner is not established by this guide. Test the same domains and link questions in your niche, then compare useful coverage and the limits of the plan you would buy.
